The Story of Marcus Garvey: Chapter One

The Story of Marcus Garvey is a self-paced English Language Arts course that begins in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, where a curious boy learned to read books, people, and the world around him, then decided he would help change it. Across six chapters, students follow Garvey from childhood to global leadership. They read closely, gather evidence, examine cause and effect, and trace how family, work, travel, injustice, and education shaped his purpose. Each chapter includes guided reading, essential vocabulary, text-based comprehension and analysis questions, a short quiz, and reflection prompts that connect Garvey’s experiences to students’ own lives. The course strengthens the skills that matter most in the age of AI: close reading, clear writing, evidence-based reasoning, independent judgment, and the courage to question the answers we are given. This is Black history taught as preparation for school, life, and the future.
